The University of Utah was recently invited to join the American Association of Universities, the most prestigious association of academic institutions operating at the forefront of scientific inquiry and educational excellence. The AAU only has 65 member institutions and invitations to join are infrequent; 2019’s were the first since 2012. 

EDUCATION

Our five schools and colleges graduate 1,250 new health care providers annually, helping to solve projected provider shortages. Today, more than half of our training health care professionals at the University of Utah are women. Since 1967, more than 36,000 doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, mid-level specialists, scientists, educators, and other health providers have graduated from University of Utah.

No. 1 in Utah: For the sixth consecutive year, U.S. News and World Report ranked University of Utah Hospital tops in Utah. Additionally, Orthopedics finished #50 while the following adult specialties all ranked as High Performing: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair, Cancer, Colon Cancer Surgery, Heart Bypass Surgery, Heart Failure, Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement, Lung Cancer Surgery, Ophthalmology, and Urology.

Top Medicare Rating in Utah: University of Utah Hospital received a 5-out-of-5-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Fewer than 10 percent of academic medical centers nationwide received this highest-possible designation (2018).

Best Large Employers: In 2019, Forbes ranked University of Utah #1 and University of Utah Health #4 on its first-ever America’s Best Employers by State rankings. Forbes also ranked U of U #3 nationally among America’s Best Employers for Women in 2019.

The newly established Huntsman Mental Health Institute will focus on advancing knowledge and relieving suffering through research-informed treatment of mental illness. The Huntsman Family Foundation donated $150 million to for the effort, the largest gift in university history.

Reaching New Heights. U of U Health researchers received more than $373 million in awards in fiscal year 2019, representing an incredible 50% growth over 5 years.

Renowned for the award-winning genetics education website learn.genetics.edu, the Genetic Science Learning Center is collaborating with the National Institutes of Health All of Us Research Program to develop educational materials on genetics and precision medicine for the public, patients, and health care providers nationwide. 

Interdisciplinary Ingenuity. U of U Health is bringing together bright minds from disparate disciplines to focus on four areas that are poised to make big impacts: genomic medicine, neuroscience, diabetes and metabolism, and inflammation/infectious disease.

Incubator for Innovation: 169 spinoff companies founded, including Myriad Genetics, Biofire and ARUP. In 2017 alone, there were 101 new invention disclosures, 141 U.S. patents applications, and 9 new start-ups.

Top in Patient Satisfaction: 44% of all clinical providers rank in the top 10% in the nation for patient satisfaction. More than half of those (24%), rank in the top 1% in the nation according to Press Ganey rankings (Harvard Business Review).
